McWhirter Locke Associates is a firm of Chartered Surveyors and Chartered Building Surveyors, based in London W1.


The Firm

McWhirter Locke Associates Chartered Surveyors is a merger of two practises: McWhirter Associates Chartered Surveyors and Gibbs Locke Consulting.

Andrew McWhirter established McWhirter Associates in 2001 and quickly set up their offices in London’s primary property consultancy district, where they flourished. Duncan Locke established Gibbs Locke Consulting in 2013.

Synergies between the two firms enable them to provide a wider and better integrated range of services to their clients. The aim of the partners has always been to offer a perfect combination of expertise and the best standards of service. The firm remains firmly rooted in the heart of London’s property consultancy quarter.

Duncan Locke BSc FRICS

Duncan has worked all his professional life in commercial property commencing with a placement year from University at Conrad Ritblat and Co in London W1 (now trading as Colliers). Following graduation he qualified at Mann and Co in Surrey and then joined the firm of Grimley and Son now GVA in 1986. He became a salaried partner in 1991 and equity partner in 1995. He held the position of National Head of the Lease Consultancy Department for approximately 15 years.

He has advised on property matters across all principal sectors of the market including offices, industrial and retail properties and some specialist sectors such as residential, education and motor trade properties. Primarily his work has been in the field of leasehold property. He has acted in the capacity of arbitrator and independent expert and as an expert witness.

He has given evidence as an expert witness in the County Court, High Court and in other tribunals. He has acted in the role of client manager for FTSE 100 and major UK corporates including Wolseley plc, Centrica plc, The AA and National Car Parks.

Andrew McWhirter BSc FRICS

Andrew obtained a broad range of experience with a number of different firms and institutions during his training. He has a degree in Building Surveying and qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in 1982. Prior to commencing practise on his own account, he held senior and partner positions in several significant London firms.

Whilst having an excellent grasp of his principle subject - building and construction, he has always held that to provide really useful advice, it is necessary to understand the wider context, which through experience, has led to a far ranging involvement in property matters over the years.

Andrew has worked on important instructions from a diverse list of clients, ranging from international and private banks to British and foreign government institutions, state sector and private schools, lottery funds, FT 100 listed companies, charities, landlords, tenants and numerous private individuals. He has a reputation particularly, for his work in construction projects, building pathology and disputes concerning neighbourly matters, dilapidations and building contracts.
